With the whole Imperial Civil War, then seeing the trouble the New Republic faced during it's infancy then eventually both sides coming together against the Yuuzhan Vong. Seeing things from the Imperial side was very refreshing during the EU. Seeing the struggle of those who aren't space monks with laser swords with. I am sick of everything revolving in a 2D plain of good and evil, another reason why I am excited for the Rogue One movie. Especially when there was a website dedicated to putting everything in order. I know there is many inconsistencies because many writers tried adding to it.
